The Marlin 1895 holds a special place in my heart.
During my twenties, I worked in the Gulf Country/Cape York area and used the 45-70 to anchor plenty of pigs and the occasional scrub bull.
Throughout thick bull dust, wet season downpours and the occasional stack, it proved a tough and reliable workhorse.
When disturbing a mob of pigs there is nothing more satisfying than cycling through a full 6 + 1 tube and flattening everything it touches, with the 45-70.
I recall one trip to a local lagoon when a large boar emerged from the fallen foliage of cabbage palm trees. A quick shouldering of the 1895 and the 300 grainer found its mark with the boar folding like a deck chair.
When I heard that Ruger had acquired the 150-year-old Marlin brand, I shared the collective unease from just about every shooter I knew who had ever owned the legendary lever action.
Would we ever see them on the shelves again? Would they maintain the quality they are renowned for?
We held our breath waiting to see what would emerge once the dust settled on Ruger-Marlin deal.
After getting my hands on the newly arrived Marlin 1895SBL 45-70 I’m happy to announce that “Old Faithful” is back. Ruger have done an outstanding job, not only maintaining, but improving the iconic status of the 1895SBL.
The first thing I noted on the new 1895 is the quality finish. The stainless barrel and receiver are well machined and have a nice, polished sheen.
Cycling the action is smooth and crisp. Upon shouldering the rifle the forend and butt-stock have sharp chequering providing a nice solid grip. The ghost ring and front fibre-optic marry up to provide a solid sight picture.
I’d almost forgotten just how nice a rifle these were! The 1895 served me well in some of Australia’s harshest conditions on a daily basis, with fast follow up shots, smooth cycling and indestructible build. I have no doubt you’ll be equally impressed.
LONG LIVE THE LEVER GUN™
