When you’re new to pig hunting, having a seasoned guide makes all the difference. For Brisbane’s ICT Support expert Brent Evans, that guide was Martin Land. This autumn, Brent joined Martin, his wife Ann-Marie, their son Harrison and their dog Bailey for an adventure in Quilpie, Queensland’s Channel Country. For Marty, this annual trip isn’t just a getaway - it’s essential work, helping local graziers by culling the destructive pigs.
Brent was well-prepared, thanks to his colleagues at NIOA. Armed with a Savage 110 Tactical in 6.5 Creedmoor, a Leupold VX-3HD scope and a Butler Creek Bone Collector sling, Brent’s gear was top-notch. With ammo from NIOA and advice from seasoned hunters, Brent felt ready for the challenge.
The first day tested their patience. A mob of pigs appeared, but harsh conditions kept them out of reach. Five days in, their luck turned. Marty, ever watchful from the Landcruiser, shouted, “PIG!” Brent, who had started to doubt their existence, took his shot from the back seat. The pig went down instantly.
Marty followed up with another successful shot the next day, but most of the trip was spent enjoying campfire camaraderie and exploring the vast property. For a “city-dweller” like Brent, Marty’s ingenious “Donkey” hot shower - a gas bottle, a pipe and a bit of fire - was a welcome touch of comfort.
The trip ended with an Anzac Day dawn service, complete with The Last Post and a gunfire breakfast.
“It was a great trip,” Brent reflects. “Even though we didn’t bag as many pigs as we’d hoped, the company and hospitality made it unforgettable.”
With Marty at the helm, Brent’s outback adventure was one to remember.
